Sometimes our child gets a cough and a runny nose (especially here in Atlanta, the city of trees and allergies) and we question ourselves, “should we call the doctor on this one?”

It is the same thing when something goes wrong in the home. What constitutes a true emergency versus what can we wait on to take care of on its own?

Here are 3 times when a homeowner should call a professional plumber:

1)The toilet and the shower are backing up. This can be a main line problem. An auger snake from Home Depot probably isn’t going to clear that one.

2)Anything involving gas pipes. This isn’t the time to figure out that guy on youtube had no idea what he was talking about.

3)Water heater replacement. There are a lot of variables that are involved in getting this job done right the first time. An experienced plumber knows how to make sure every single detail is taken care of. Flooding your basement or crawlspace is not worth the risk.

Prevention is the best medicine. Be careful allowing grease, hair or floss into your drains. A weekly practice of putting boiling water into your drain (of course be careful doing this) can keep your drains clear.
